I often find that importing pdf files into a vector graphics editor, like Corel or Illustrator, can result in the fonts missing and poorly substituted...
Lost fonts in Pdf
When I import a pdf file created using latex and containing maths into a vector graphics editor, like Corel or Illustrator, I often find the mathematical symbols and other fonts are all messed up. Apparently, this is the fault of the graphics editors that don't handle embedded fonts well (what do they do I ask myself?). Anyway, I finally found this simple, if bizarre workaround that encodes text as outlines prior to importing into the graphics program. The catch? You need a full version of Acrobat for this.
- First in Acrobat add an invisible watermark (?!) to your document (document -> watermark -> add... set opacity 0%). Although this step appears pointless, without it step 2 doesn't work.
- Next convert your text to outlines (advanced -> print production -> flattener preview -> convert all strokes to outlines).
- Save the file, then open in your favorite overpriced vector graphics editor confident that your maths symbols will be as you intended.
